The Chicago Blackhawks and Montreal Canadiens have agreed to the following deal:
To Montreal: Dustin Brown (W) + Connor Carrick (D) + 2014 4th Round (Chi)
To Chicago: Lars Eller (C)
From Chicago's perspective:
- While I love Brown's hits and SOG, he'll be 30 in November and he seems to have lost a step. Maybe he played injured this year and will return to 50pts, but that's a risk I'm willing to take. I am hoping Devante Smith-Pelley will continue his growth and fill some of the void left by Brown.
- After picking up Zadarov and Morin, I feel I have the depth to part with a prospect like Carrick.
- I was not going to use the 4th round pick....whereas it's a useful asset to Montreal ... as the Habs are light on picks for this draft. So I wasn't going to let this fall apart over a late pick.
- After losing Hodgson, I was looking for a young, buy-low type C. Very hard to find. While Eller wasn't great this year....he did look great last year and is having a good playoffs. And he slots in as my 2nd best player for FOW...so definitely filling a need, and only 25.
Thanks to Steve for his patience and flexibility to see this deal through...

As some GMs can attest, I like Eller quite a bit, but the Eakin pickup in the draft kinda made one of the two available... glad to get a solid wing with big HB numbers, plus Carrick who, if he makes the show, will most likely slot in as an Offensive D with PP time... 4th round pick is gravy, but necessary gravy, as I didn't really wanna move Eller...
